Oren Kalus is a psychiatrist on staff at the Ulster County Mental Health Department and in private practice in Kingston, New York. In this talk, Oren will explore why diagnosis should (or should not) matter to psychotherapists, discuss some difficult diagnoses to make, outline benefits and pitfalls of psychiatric diagnosis and assessment, and describe the use of diagnosis to untangle confusing and complex clinical presentations.  He will also outline the process of making a diagnosis, contrast this to making a psychosocial assessment, look at the uses of DSM-IV, and identify the features of a good diagnostic assessment.
